AC Crusaders Defeat Mass United FC in Final Preseason Match

Egg Harbor Twp, N.J. (May 13, 2012) – The AC Crusaders defeated Mass United FC (MUFC) 2-1 in a National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) pre-season exhibition match. 2011 leading goal scorer, Jeremy Ortiz scored both goals for the Crusaders.

“I though we looked strong in the first half,” said Ortiz. “We have a lot of guys back from last year and the younger guys add depth to a team that looks to build off of last year and strive to qualify for the playoffs.”

The Crusader’s first goal came off of a MUFC defensive mistake. An errant pass intended for a MUFC defender was intercepted by Crusaders forward, Chad Severs. Severs then played a perfectly-weighted pass into space for Ortiz to run onto. Once in open space, Ortiz did what he does best, put the ball in the back of the net.

Ortiz scored the Crusaders second goal after a beautiful give-and-go passing combination with Crusaders forward, Adam Sternberger.

“I though the team played well, to be fair, some of the lads aren’t fit yet but that is to be expected at this stage of the season and overall. I was happy with the team’s defensive shape and their ability to create offensive opportunities,” said Head Coach, Matt Driver. “ I believe the building blocks for a successful team are in place, it’s now just a matter of making sure we execute. I’d like to thank MUFC for coming down to play us and I know both coaches got a lot out of today’s friendly.”

MUFC refused to give up even after trailing 2-0 at half-time. The team kept playing hard and was rewarded when Romeo Zeqo cut the lead in half by scoring a second-half goal. Unfortunately, his efforts were too little too late as the Crusaders held on to the win.

“I thought we came out flat in the first half and the other team took advantage of this,” said MUFC Owner, Jim Antonakis. “We played much better in the second half and we look to improve as the season goes on. There are several talented players on this team and on top of trying to compete at the highest level; we’re also looking to showcase their talents on a national stage”
